I think NJCians are really aware about how Mrs Cheng's really enthusiastic about this whole "Mr Yong's going to tackle death valley" issue, but really, I see it in a very negative light. Its really silly, but the crux of it is simply, I don't see the sincerity in certain things. Heck, I'm just going to blog it. Chances are likely that I'm going to be rounded up in the general office or something.
For those outside NJ, let's put it simply: one of our teachers is going to attempt to run a marathon at Death Valley in USA. Its apparently the toughest route any marathon runner can take. 5 days of running if I'm correct, in 40-50 degrees kind of weather. Oh, with valleys and hills and all that geographic stuff. And well, everyone's excited for him. (Except maybe a handful of us) The school's encouraging us to donate money because he is running for the school. (You know, like moral support?), and as we're supposedly "touched" by his actions, we are to donate, for student development or for the Hard Times Ahead Fund.
Sounds simple? But there are some issues I see.
For example, I simply just cannot stand how Mrs Cheng said to "give till it hurts?" - Easily said than done? I know that's from the Bible about how Jesus was comparing 2 individuals who gave. A rich man who gave a lot and a poor lady who gave 2 coins. Long parable, but basically, the poor lady who gave 2 coins was praised by Jesus because well, that 2 coins meant a lot to her. But she chose to give it away, while although the rich man gave a lot, it didn't mean much to him.
Sometimes I question whether people do what they preach. Anyway, on a side note: my mom always taught me to be a happy giver. Not a sacrificial giver. Perhaps its this ideological difference, but I don't agree with what Mrs Cheng said. I understand her intentions, but really, I disagree with it. Hands down!
"To cheer Mr Yong at the airport like a celebrity, with banners and busloads of NJCians. " Alright. That was the final straw. The donation part was okay, where you provide money "until it hurts" for student development and Hard Times Ahead Fund. But with banners and busloads of students to "flood" the airport is another thing. A press conference? Goodness, where are we heading to?
I question the intention of this. To put NJ on the world map? To glorify NJ's name? It disgusts me to the core. I chose to come to a school that's humble. I chose to come to school that's not elitist. And I was glad, I was really glad I left my secondary school for NJ. The change in environment, the type of status the school potray. But what's this? Where are we heading? To give NJ a better reputation? I'm disappointed.
And besides, what are heroes? Who are heroes? These are people who don't seek media attention. These are the people who sacrifice more than what they intend to. These are people who are humble and find solutions to solve their problems?
It annoys me how this is just backfiring. For others outside NJ, maybe its like some huge big thing. But to me, its a mockery.
Yeah, Mr Yong claims he is doing it for the school and he is teaching NJCians a lesson. Yupp, true. Agreed. I can't deny anything or I shan't question what an individual claims, but really, to do it to such an extent? It amazes me.
Camping out to recieve him? Skype-ing to converse? Alright, have no issue about it.
Basically, it just annoys me how we're doing things to attract media attention. Its not right. Its not how we use to describe a hero. Its just oxymoronic. Pretty much like a paradox.
You see, I don't mind seeing Mr Yong as a hero, but with all these other factors and influence, it just doesn't seem right.
Alright, such are my opinions. I hope it was properly and responsibly done. No speculation, no nothing. Just opinions. Fair ones hopefully.

she's said all that i actually wanted to say hahahah(: so someone else does the work and i copy and paste. oh dear.
yuyan told me that death valley's a bad place to run party because its so hot that one has to change shoes every hour coz the soles would melt. what a waste of money that could have gone to help so many more people around.
btw, meltee, have i told you (that even though youre a little weird) i love youuu?(:
the bloody mosquitoes are multiplying like bacteria i tell you! not rabbits, but bacteria! there're so many of them around and i've gotten so many bites): horrible little suckers): thus, i've gotten myself a bottle of insect repellent (that smells nice, btw) and apply some almost every evening at about 5 plus(: it helps! i wish someone would create some mosquito killing thing that kills them fast and efficiently, like some weapon of mass destruction targeting mosquitoes.
